TruthTalks (Sermon) God is Able!

“Able” = an expansion of the Greek word ‘dunamis’ = miraculous power.

In this sermon Dr. Christopher Peppler, drawing from the book of Jude, talks about our everyday lives and the troubles we face, how we feel we fall short of being better disciples, etc. But he explains that God is ABLE. He is able to…

  • Speak to us when He needs to
  • Intervene in our lives when He chooses to
  • Heal and even create something out of nothing when He decides to
  • Keep us from falling
  • And more
There are no restraints or limits on His ability and His miraculous power.
This is a particularly good message to hear if you are feeling “unable” as we are given insight into all that God is able to do for us when we can’t. We all stumble through our lives as disciples of Jesus – over sinful behaviours, bad attitudes, and life circumstances,but God is able to keep us from falling away from faith in Him. ROM 8:39 nothing is ‘able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.’

GOD IS ABLE!

‘To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy— to the only God our Saviour be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen’. (Jude 24-25)

This sermon is all about how we interpret things demonstrated with music, and it’s role in the bible and how the music in OUR lives sounds.

In this sermon Dr. Christopher Peppler reads from Psalm 139, using this as an example of showing us the difference between how when we internalise this, or any other verse and how we can interpret verses in either a major or minor key. He also demonstrates, using his “beater to better” guitar project, how something that other’s can’t see any value in, can be raised to be a thing of beauty and great music.

Some of us come into our lives:

  • with imperfections,
  • great but we get beaten up by life

But, for all of us…

…when Jesus breathes new life into us, we are in the hands of a Master Craftsman and He will transform us.

Ai-sh, can it be true? Yes, yes it can! Maybe even in our lifetime!

Last week we posted a sobering article on Artificial Intelligence and how it could impact us on many different levels. After that, there is a question and answer session by his daughter (yours truly) where I try to ask the kind of questions I hope I’m not the only one asking. I try to catch him off-balance and often ask incredibly stupid questions (I realise in hindsight after he’s answered them), but it helps me understand some of these bigger concepts and I do hope it assists you too.

But why did this have to happen? Where was God?

Dr Christopher Peppler talks about the distressing events we face in everyday life and how to handle them. Chris looks at questions like “why do bad things happen to good people?” and “why didn’t God intervene?” Listen to this sermon preached at the Village Church on the 26th of June 2016 to hear answers to these, and other important questions that we may, on occasions, ask ourselves. Jesus answers these questions in John 13-16 and we are taken through those verses as well as how we are expected to cope with suffering and evil in this world and how to find peace in it all.

Do you know the origin of the expression ‘a red herring’? = ‘something that distracts from the main issue’ New England settlers who went hunting in the forests left pieces of smoked Herring on their tracks to confuse any wolves trying to track them. John chapter 7 contains some Red Herrings and we must not be distracted by them. About Me

My name is Christopher Peppler and I was born in Cape Town, South Africa in 1947. While working in the financial sector I achieved a number of business qualifications from the Institute of Bankers, Damelin Management School, and The University of the Witwatersrand Business School. After over 20 years as a banker, I followed God’s calling and joined the ministry full time. After becoming a pastor of what is now a quite considerable church, I  earned an undergraduate theological qualification from the Baptist Theological College of Southern Africa and post-graduate degrees from two United States institutions. I was also awarded the Doctor of Theology in Systematic Theology from the University of Zululand in 2000.

Four years before that I established the South African Theological Seminary (SATS), which today is represented in over 70 countries and has more than 2 500 active students enrolled with it. I presently play an role supervising Masters and Doctoral students.

I am a passionate champion of the Christocentric or Christ-centred Principle, an approach to biblical interpretation and theological construction that emphasises the centrality of Jesus

I have been happily married to Patricia since the age of 20, have two children, Lance and Karen, a daughter-in-law Tracey, and granddaughters Jessica and Kirsten. I have now retired from both church and seminary leadership and devote my time to writing, discipling, and the classical guitar.
