Gnosticism is a complex belief system holding that matter is essentially bad or inconsequential while the non-material is good and of vital importance. It also includes the belief that there are a series of emanations between mortal man and unknowable divinity, and that enlightenment and transformation can only be obtained through knowledge of these mysterious teachings
